Chlorine gas leak in Neerabup
STAFF REPORTERS, The West Australian
June 4, 2010, 12:06 pm

Thirty-six Fire and Rescue Service firefighters are at the scene of a chlorine gas leak in Neerabup near Turnbull Road and Warman Street, along with police and St John's Ambulance.

A FESA spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 9am when an employee reported the chemical leak at the David Moss Corporation on Turnbull Road.

The building was immediately evacuated and police have blocked off a section of Turnbull Road.

"A chemical substance in the form of polyvinylchloride (PVC) granules is believed to have overheated at the David Moss Corporation site on Turnbull Road. This has resulted in fumes moving in a westerly direction," FESA said.

"The fumes could involve carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride.

"The site where the incident occurred has been evacuated and there has been no impact offsite. Some warehouses downwind of the facility may be evacuated as a further precaution."

FESA said there was no direct threat to life or homes in the community. As a precautionary measure, FESA is asking people in the area to remain inside, out of the fumes, with doors and windows closed. Air conditioners should also be switched off.

People have been asked to stay away from the Neerabup light industrial area and road access has been closed to motorists.

Flynn Drive is closed between Tranquil Drive and Mather Drive.

Mather Drive is closed between Flynn Drive and Pederick Road.

These are likely to remain closed for much of today.
